Can You Use an HSA at WLF Club?

An HSA card works differently than an insurance card, and the difference is worth knowing before you swipe it.

You are about to book something at WLF Club, you have an HSA card in your wallet, and you want to know whether it is going to work here. It is usually the next question after finding out that WLF is out of network. Can I use my HSA, and the short answer is yes, for qualifying services, with your plan deciding what qualifies.

That second half is not a hedge. It is the whole subject. We are not your plan administrator and we are not accountants, so what follows is how an HSA generally works, where people get caught out, and what we can and cannot tell you.

The insight

An HSA card is not a coupon that works on anything with "wellness" in the name. It covers qualified medical expenses, and your plan decides what qualifies, not the card reader and not us.

What an HSA actually is

A health savings account is a tax-advantaged account you open through a bank or trustee, generally alongside a qualifying high-deductible health plan. The IRS puts it plainly: an HSA is "a tax-exempt trust or custodial account you set up with a qualified HSA trustee to pay or reimburse certain medical expenses you incur."Read the definition in IRS Publication 969. Money goes in before tax, and you draw it down when you have an expense to pay.

HealthCare.gov describes it the same way, as "a type of savings account that lets you set aside money on a pre-tax basis to pay for qualified medical expenses."See the glossary entry. The word doing all the work in both definitions is "qualified." The account itself does not know where you spent it. What matters is whether the expense meets the definition, and if it does not, the IRS is direct about the consequence: "if you don't use a distribution from your HSA for qualified medical expenses, you must pay tax on the distribution."

What generally counts as a medical expense

The working definition lives in IRS Publication 502: medical expenses are "the costs of diagnosis, cure, mitigation, treatment, or prevention of disease and for the purpose of affecting any part or function of the body."Read the definition in IRS Publication 502. That is deliberately broad, and it turns on medical purpose rather than on the kind of building you are standing in.

Whether a particular thing you book at WLF meets that definition is not ours to declare. It is set by your plan and your plan administrator, the rules change, and two people can get different answers for the same service because they have different plans. Anyone who tells you otherwise, including a website, is guessing on your behalf.

Where people get surprised

This is the part most people do not expect, and it is the reason this post is worth reading before you book rather than after.

The same publication that defines a medical expense also says those expenses "don't include expenses that are merely beneficial to general health, such as vitamins or a vacation," and, separately and specifically, that "you can't include in medical expenses health club dues or amounts paid to improve one's general health or to relieve physical or mental discomfort not related to a particular medical condition."Read that section of Publication 502

WLF Club is a clinic and a gym under one roof, and that is exactly where this gets muddy. Clinical care and gym access are not automatically treated the same way, even when you book both in the same building on the same afternoon. So the useful move is to stop thinking of it as "does my HSA work at WLF" and start thinking of it as "what specifically am I paying for here," then take that answer to your plan administrator.

Bring it up on the free phone consultation. We can tell you exactly what a given visit or membership is, which is the half of the question we actually own.

How it works at WLF Club

WLF Club is at 5724 W Vickery Blvd in Fort Worth, TX. We accept HSA cards for qualifying services. Because we are out of network, there is no claim filed with anyone on your behalf, so paying with an HSA here is a payment, not a claim, and nothing gets submitted or approved in the background.

If you would rather pay another way and take a receipt to your plan afterward, that is what a superbill is for. It is a line item receipt of what was done for you, and we issue one on request. Ask for it.

Who actually decides, and it isn't us

Yes. We accept HSA cards for qualifying services. Whether a specific service qualifies is determined by your plan, not by us, so confirm it with your plan administrator before you count on it.

That is the same answer that sits on our medical and memberships pages, repeated here word for word on purpose. Rules change, plans differ from one employer to the next, and your administrator can see things about your account that we cannot. A five minute call to them before your appointment is worth more than any paragraph we could write.

Frequently asked questions

QCan I use my HSA at WLF Club?

Yes. We accept HSA cards for qualifying services. Whether a specific service qualifies is determined by your plan, not by us, so confirm it with your plan administrator before you count on it.

QDoes WLF Club decide what my HSA covers?

No. That belongs to your plan and your plan administrator. We can tell you exactly what a visit or a membership is. Whether it counts as a qualified medical expense under your plan is not ours to determine.

QCan I use my HSA to pay for a membership?

Do not assume so. IRS Publication 502 says health club dues cannot be included in medical expenses, and a gym membership is a different thing from clinical care even when both happen in one building. Ask your plan administrator about your specific situation before you count on it.

QWhat happens if I use HSA money on something that doesn't qualify?

The IRS is direct about it: if you do not use a distribution from your HSA for qualified medical expenses, you have to pay tax on that distribution. That is between you, your plan administrator and the IRS, which is why it is worth asking them first rather than finding out later.

QDo I need a superbill to use my HSA?

Not if you are paying with the HSA card itself. A superbill is for people who pay another way and want an itemized receipt to send to their plan afterward.

QCan I use my HSA even though WLF Club is out of network?

Being out of network does not by itself rule it out, because an HSA is a way of paying rather than an insurance plan. What qualifies is still set by your plan and your plan administrator.
